The History of the Davis Family Reunion
About 118 years ago, a young man named James Davis, affectionately known as Jim, was born to Emanuel Davis and Lucretia Johnson in Mechanicsville, SC. He met a beautiful young lady named Edna Prescott. Edna was the daughter of Reverend Frierson Prescott and Emma Cook. Jim and Edna met at Woodrow Baptist Church in Woodrow, SC, where they fell in love and married in 1927. Jim was a sharecropper who moved the family from place to place in order to provide a better living for his family. He loved his children very much, and believed in working hard, and taught his children the value of hard work. The children worked very hard and hardly had time to attend school. However, Edna believed in education. Some days while Jim would be waiting on the children to meet him in the field, Edna would slip them out of the back door to meet the school bus. She knew that education was important and the key to a better future. Although Edna knew that the crops and the chores had to get done, she wanted her children to finish school, get a decent job,s and have a prosperous life. God blessed Jim and Edna with wonderful children. Blaney, Johnny, James, Jr. "Dick", Mae Frances, Hughley, Lindburgh "Bug", Elizabeth ' "Sus", Doris, Mildred "Mil", Mae Verna "Snookie", Roosevelt "Bo", Edith "Coote", Eddie Wallace, Edna Lois "Lo", Betty "Gute", BC, John "Whet", Catherine "Cat", Sylvia "Sylv", Herbert "Herb", and Vivian "Pen". Life was hard for the Davis family sometimes, but God brought them through. The hard life that they sometime endured made them stronger and more appreciative of each other. Jim and Edna had good children. They both believe that nothing was more important in life than God, family, love, and honesty. Edna wanted to preserve this family love. One day Roosevelt and Lindburgh brought the idea to our mother of having a Davis family reunion. Mama thought that it was a great idea. She talked with God about it and shared this exciting idea with the rest of the children and made it happen. They decided that the reunion would always be the second week in July. So in July 1968, Jim and Edna Davis, along with their children and grandchildren, celebrated their first Davis Family Reunion. The first officers were Lindburgh Davis, Sr., President; Roosevelt Davis, Vice President; Catherine Johnson, Secretary; and Edna Davis, Treasurer. James Davis, Jr. became vice president after Roosevelt went home to be with the Lord. Years later, we are still celebrating our parents and our love for one another. What a mighty God we serve! Today, I believe that mama and daddy are looking down on us from the Heavens, at the many generations in this room, and their hearts are filled with joy. And, as Genesis 28:14 says, "And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south; and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
May God bless each of you!
